BBC 6 Music 'Could Be Saved' Following Listeners' Protests

Plans to scrap BBC 6 Music could be shelved following listeners' protests to save the digital radio station.

The BBC Trust, which is currently reviewing the planned closure, is said to partially support calls for the station to remain open.

In March, BBC Director General Mark Thompson proposed the closure BBC 6 Music and the Asian Network as part of budget cuts.

These were then put forward for review to the BBC Trust, which is due to publish its findings later this year.

However, according to The Times newspaper, the Trust is considering recommending that the BBC extends its consultation period for 6 Music.

The radio station's listening figures have received a huge boost since news of its planned closure – possibly as early as the end of 2011 – first emerged.
