The BBC is seeking to launch a new flagship music show, but has ruled out a full return for Top Of The Pops.
The chart show was a regular fixture on British TV for 42 years until it was axed in 2006.
In recent years, the show has been revived for special seasonal episodes, but the BBC's head of popular music Andy Parfitt said the corporation wanted to use a new format.
"We are working on it," he said at a breakfast meeting of the Broadcasting Press Guild in London.
"It would be great if we could get a new popular music-based programme with a new format, a new kind of offer that really worked for the audience.”
Parfitt also highlighted how the BBC's summer festival coverage and other main music show, Later...With Jools Holland, only had a niche appeal.
