Taylor Swift has defended her decision to write about Kanye West's outburst at last year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The rapper infamously interrupted the country singer's acceptance speech at the ceremony, claiming Beyonce should have won her award.

Last month, Swift came under fire when she debuted the West-referencing song 'Innocent' at this year's VMAs.

But the 20-year-old has said it was important for her to recall the incident in a song.

"I think a lot of people expected me to write a song about [West]," she told New York magazine.
"But, for me, it was important to write a song to him."

Swift also said she was “proud” of her performance and thanked her fans for helping her overcome West's outburst.

'Innocent' features on the singer's forthcoming album 'Speak Now'.
