The viewing figures for first live edition of this year's X Factor are down 2 million on 2010, according to overnight ratings.
The opening show on Saturday (October 8) attracted 10.4 million viewers, which is the lowest opening night figure inthree years.
Last year, 12.2 million people watch the first live show, while 11.3 million tuned in for the same episode in 2009.
According to the Guardian, many viewers have been left upset by changes to the format, including the length of the programme, which was two and a half hours long.
The judging panel is also radically different to last year, with Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland replacing Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue.
The first programme in this series also included a new twist, which saw each judge vote off one of their acts.
