The nominations for this year's Oscars were announced today with Martin Scorcese's 'Hugo' leading the charge with 11 nods from the industry’s most prestigious panel.
Set in 1930's Paris and based on the story of a 12-year-old boy who lives alone in a train station, 'Hugo' signalled the director's first brush with animation and his first foray into family film making.
Nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography, the film faces competition from the likes of 'The Artist,' 'The Tree of Life' and Steven Spielberg’s 'War Horse.'
Elsewhere, George Clooney and Brad Pitt battle it out in the category for Best Actor, for their performances in 'The Descendents' and 'Moneyball,' and Meryl Streep picked up her 17th nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
As always, there were some notable omissions, with 'Drive' nominated only for sound editing, and the hotly-tipped 'Shame,' starring Michael Fassbender, failing to make the cut completely.
Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's 'J. Edgar' also suffers from the same fate, whilst Gary Oldman was nominated for his leading role in 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.'
