The Killers' 2004 album Hot Fuss has been named the best debut of all time by Gigwise readers.

Over 27,000 votes were cast in the poll, which pitted releases from the likes of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bloc Party, Lady Gaga, Oasis and Blur against one another. The winner was announced today (29 Jaunuary, 2013).

The Killers took an easy victory over closest rival Muse, who placed at No.2 with their 1999 debut release, Showbiz. Oasis iconic 1994 debut Definitely Maybe was voted third, Arctic Monkey's 2006 release Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was voted fourth and The Beatles' Please Please Me, released in 1963, placed fifth.

Hot Fuss introduced the world to Las Vegas showman Brandon Flowers and his desert-born bandmates, but more importantly, to the band's brilliant blend of classic rock and modern pop. Hits like 'Mr Brightside' and 'Somebody Told Me' were heavy enough to the indie kids, but boasted choruses huge enough to win over the mainstream and find fans the world over.

The album is arguably The Killers' strongest release to date, with the band not experiencing such huge popularity again until 2012, when they released their critically acclaimed fourth album, Battle Born.

Pop females and hip hop didn't fare too well in the poll however, with the The Spice Girls 1996 debut Spice proving the least popular album in the poll. It was closely followed by Dr Dre's debut, The Chronic, which was released in 1992. Madonna and Lady Gaga tied at No.3 with their debut albums, The First Album (1983) and The Fame (2008) respectively.

Jay-Z placed fifth from bottom with his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt.
