More about:

Selena Gomez is facing fierce criticism from religious groups after the young singer wore a bindi during a raunchy, Bollywood-inspired performance at the MTV Movie Awards.

The 20 year old has been accused of 'cultural appropriation' by sections of the Hindu faith as her new single 'Come And Get It' is heavily Asian themed.

Despite positive critical reception for her performance, the religious connotations of wearing a bindi on her forehead were perhaps not completely clear to the young star. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed explained: "The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance."

He added: "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol."

Selena Gomez is under pressure from Hindus to apologise

However, it was Gomez's raunchy performance that angered many. Zed continued: "It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed."

"Selena should apologise and then she should get aquainted with the basics of world religions."

Below: squeaky clean pop stars with a dark past
