Coldplay's Chris Martin has revealed that he was inspired by the simple chord progressions of Katy Perry's music when writing the band's new album.

Speaking to Beats, the singer specifically discussed one of Ghost Stories' singles, 'A Sky Full Of Stars'. "I'm not the most poetic of lyricists," he admitted, "but I know what feels right."

He added: "It's not saying someting's broken so we should give up, it's saying something's broken so let's work on it and make it better than it was before."

As for his inspirations, Martin said: "I'll tell you the truth, I was listening to a lot of Katy Perry. A lot of her songs have the same chord sequence. Your body feels comfortable with them, and then there's a melody on top and a groove you can get into. So there's a simplicity to that."
