Percy Sledge, the singer of the 1966 hit ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’, has died at the age of 73.

According to the Associated Press, Dr. William "Beau" Clark, coroner for East Baton Rouge Parish, confirmed that Sledge died early Tuesday morning, about an hour after midnight, of natural causes in hospice care. Sledge has previously undergone surgery for liver cancer in 2014.

Sledge was perhaps best known for his 1966 No. 1 hit ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’, which was also his debut single. Sledge went on to release several other successful songs, such as 'Warm And Tender Love’, ‘It Tears Me Up’ and ‘Take Time to Know Her’, along with 1974’s ‘I'll Be Your Everything’.

Sledge was inducted in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1993, as well as the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Steve Green from talent agency Artists International Management Inc. said of Sledge: "He was one of my first acts, he was a terrific person and you don't find that in this business very often. He was truly a standout."

Sledge is survived by his wife and children.
