Despite often cutting a peripheral figure in some of the biggest bands in the world, Pat Smear carries an air of modest sophistication, even from the shadows, so it would make sense for him to offer style tips. Cindy Crawford spotted his potential and recruited him for MTV show House Of Style, in which he made a number of appearances. Bizarre, but it somehow works.
He may be part of the biggest rock band on the planet these days, but bassist Nate Mendel started to play the violin as a child - before discovering punk and teaching himself to play bass as fast as he possibly could. We'd say he probably made the right decision.
Taylor Hawkins joined the band in 1997 - but he wasn't poached from a rival rock juggernaut. Instead, the drummer cut his teeth as Alanis Morissette's touring drummer, providing the percussion as she tore through hits such as 'Jagged Little Pill'. We can only imagine the epic drum solos he suppressed throughout that tour.
Even after joining Foo Fighters, Nate Mendel had doubts. He planned to quit in 1997 to rejoin first band Sunny Day Real Estate, but changed his mind at the last minute. Probably for the best, we reckon.
His face may be recognisable from the Foos these days, but Pat Smear is also a founding member of incendiary punk band the Germs, and enjoyed a chaotic time as Nirvana's live rhythm guitarist. We can only assume this is where Smear and Grohl's friendship began to blossom.
Chris Shiflett marked his experience in cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes by inking the inside of his bottom lip with the words 'gimme gimme', which, of course, seems like a natural response. It healed up so bad, however, that he had to redo it and endured twice the pain. Ouch.
Aside from being a merciless drummer, Hawkins is pretty comfortable when it comes to taking centre stage too. Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders formed in 2004 and have released two albums, even nabbing members of Queen, The Cars and, of course, Foo Fighters to feature on that traditionally difficult second record. Judging by that role call, Hawkins is held in high regard.
In contrast to his bandmates, Nate Mendel ditched the band side project premise by releasing his first solo album in 2015. Under new moniker Lieutenant, Mendel showcased his impressive songwriting credentials on If I Kill This Thing We're All Going To Eat For A Week, further reinforcing that, away from Dave Grohl, the Foos are a talented bunch.
Although he joined Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic on stage for a number of performances at Nirvana's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pat Smear wasn't inducted himself. Sure, he may not have been listed as an official member of the band, but he contributed immensely to their riotous live show, even playing on some of their biggest hits. Justice for Pat?
Me First and the Gimmee Gimmees released Are We Not Men? We Are Diva! in 2014, a collection of covers by artists such as Lady Gaga, Barbara Streisand and Christina Aguilera. Chris Shiflett contributed guitar to classics such as 'Beautiful' and 'I Will Survive' with turbo charged results.
Taylor Hawkins is no stranger to the big screen either. In 2013, he bravely took on the role of Iggy Pop in film CBGB, which received an absolute kicking from critics, and hasn't made an acting return since.
Not to be outdone by his bandmate's forays into the acting world, Nate Mendel starred in indie movie Our Burden Is Light, playing a character's boyfriend and, yep, bassist. Best to stick to what you know.
