'I'm running for President in 2020' - 7 musicians who tried their hand at politics

From Nirvana's Kris Novoselic to Blur's Dave Rowntree

Click ahead to take a look at these musicians who tried (and sometimes failed) to enter the political world.

Brian May: The touring Queen guitarist has long been an advocate for animal rights, but has launched a 'Common Decency' movement this year in order to combat corruption within Parliament. Fair play, Mr May.

Kris Novoselic: The Nirvana bassist first made his political views apparent when the band rallied against a bill making certain types of music illegal for under 18's by branding it "erotic." Since then, he%u2019s been a state committeeman, chairman of a voting reform group and a Democrat supporter.

Dave Rowntree: The Blur drummer has been an avid supporter of the Labour party, standing for office in both 2010 and 2014 and losing both times. He didn't win, which is probably all the best for those reunion shows.

Sonny Bono: After immense success with his ex-wife Cher, he ran for and was elected Republican Mayor of Palm Springs. He made it into the United States Congress in 1994, a position he continued to hold until he died in 1998 after a tragic skiing accident.

Jello Biafra: The Dead Kennedys frontman ran for Mayor of San Fransisco in 1997. His campaign slogan was �There�s always room for Jello� and he had policies such as requiring businessman to wear clown suits and legalising squatting. Funnily enough, he didn�t quite make the cut.

Wyclef Jean: Wyclef achieved huge success with The Fugees and his solo work, but he couldn't replicate those achievements in the political world. He attempted to run for Presidency of Haiti in the 2010 collections, but was refused entry to the ballot by the countries Electorall Council.

Peter Garrett: The Midnight Oil singer was elected as the Labor Member for the Kingsford Smith riding in 2004. He performed politically charged anthems like 'Beds Are Burning' and 'Put Down That Weapon'. Peter's fought for indigenous people's rights and aid of homeless youth. He was named Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts in 2007.

To be honest Kanye, we hadn't guessed. You'd been rambling a string of nonsensical statements for 15 minutes and that bombshell came as quite the surprise.

Whether or not West makes good on his vow remains to be seen, but he's not the first popular musician to move into politics.
