'The Killers. That second album was garbage'

While there's a certain pleasure to be had from discovering a musician late and binge-listening to their entire back-catalogue, there's nothing quite as rewarding as following the artist you love from the very beginning. Unless, that is, they disappoint you.

The 'difficult second album' cliche exists for a reason. For many artists who've produced an acclaimed debut, the hype and expectation surrounding its follow-up proves too much to cope with. And there are few harsher critics than Reddit users.

We've mined this Reddit forum, and compiled a list of their most disappointing second albums of all time.

  • "For me it has to be Alt-J. An Awesome Wave is one of my favourite albums of all time. However This Is All Yours is just not my cup of tea." (Mifshaq)

  • "Mumford & Sons. Sigh No More > Babel. Sigh No More has some standout tracks that even cynical and veteran listeners could find things they liked about it. Babel was just more of the same with a lot less heart and thought." (edm_frank_sinatra)

  • "Vampire Weekend. Their first album was garage (indie) rock at its best. The second album, although still good, was a huge disappointment to me. They went from college garage fun to highly-produced indie sameness, meaning they lost anything that set them apart in their first album." (ghost-from-tomorrow)

  • "The Killers. That second album was garbage." (TheSkinnyD)

  • "For me I'd have to say MGMT. Their first album was refreshing and fun, great to listen to. The second one sounds like the drugs just kicked in." (mamoocando)

  • "The Fratellis. Costello Music was an awesome collection of catchy garage rock tunes, but their second album had them going for a more generic country sound. It's still a good record, but it just can't match in terms of creativity." (TheNorwishHedge)

  • "Panic! at the Disco. A Fever You Can't Sweat Out was one of the most lyrically interesting albums I've ever heard. Pretty.Odd was just sadness." (Morgensengel)

  • "Snoop. Doggystyle was just pure 90s gangsta rap, The Doggfather was just wtf." (ATLiensinyosockdraw)
