Members of Slipknot, Slayer and Anthrax have all paid tribute to Ronnie James Dio, who died on Sunday.

The vocalist, who performed with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, passed away following a battle with stomach cancer. He was 67.

Slipknot's Corey Taylor told MTV that the music world had lost “a real talent and a genuinely great man”.

"Words cannot describe my sadness and music will never be the same without his voice and honesty,” Taylor added.

“He will always be an icon to heavy metal and hard rock.”

Slayer guitarist Kerry King, who saw Dio a month ago, said he was “lucky” to have known the singer, adding: “He will be hugely missed.”

In a statement, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian described Dio as “the nicest man in metal”.

Other tributes to Dio have come from Metallica's Lars Ulrich and KISS, who said they would "miss" the star.

News of Dio’s death was broken by his wife Wendy in a message on the star’s website.

As well as performing with Black Sabbath, the heavy metal vocalist also worked with Heaven and Hell.
