Unlike the blaxploitation movie itself - about a tough detective who takes the law into his own hands - which was a commercial failure, Gaye’s soundtrack positively excelled and overshadowed the film it soundtracks. The title track ‘Trouble Man’, the film’s only song with lyrics on, was a top ten hit for Gaye.
