First person shooters seem to have been around forever, in many ways replacing platform games as the number one genre of choice for any gamer.

From the primitive days of Operation Wolf, through to the mid 1990's outpouring of classics such as Doom II, Duke Nukem 3D and the immortal GoldenEye 007, right up to modern landmarks Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock, demand for the FPS has always been high, and developers have rarely dissapointed.

Here are our favourites from the last twenty years, starting with Wolfenstein and culminating with Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and with plenty of masterpieces inbetween.
