Freddie Mercury, Adele, PJ Harvey: Biggest News Stories Of The Week (Sep 9)

As another week winds down, Gigwise takes its traditional look back at what has happened in music over the last seven days.

The biggest story by far was the 65th anniversary of Freddie Mercury. The Queen frontman, who died in 1991, was celebrated by his former bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor, with tributes flowing from the great and good throughout the music world.

The Kooks released a new video for Rosie exclusively on Gigwise, which was nearly as popular as Katy Perry singing happy birthday to Freddie.

Yes, this week really has been all about an overrated show pony whose best days were nearly forty years ago. Google marked the event by placing a special doodle on its front page, which linked to a specially created video of gibberish classic Don’t Stop Me Now.

Elsewhere, Rihanna topped a Digital Spy poll of the sexiest women of 2011, Adele was forced to cancel two gigs due to illness, Keith Richards picked up a GQ award for Best Writer, of all things, for his autobiography.

And, of course, there was the small matter of the Mercury Prize, won for the second time by PJ Harvey, her gong for Let England Shake taking pride of place in her downstairs loo next to 2001’s Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.
