The Ten Greatest Movie Monsters Revealed

Movie monsters have come a long way in the last sixty years, as is clearly evidenced by this list. From giant ants in 1954's Them!, through the brilliant Predator in 1987, right up to today, there is nothing that can quite divide an audience like the sight of a monster filling the big screen.

Obviously, film makers hope that their monsters terrify the audience, even though more often than not they fill the cinemas with the sound of inadvertent laughter more than startled screams. Ineed, the best monsters are those rarely seen, such as the shark in Jaws, or the monsters in The Mist, rather than those that are staring you straight in the eye.

We've also decided that, due to the wonders of modern CGI, not to include any monsters from this century, even if such creatures as those seen in, say, Cloverfield, would naturally take their place in this list. Ironically, it's for the same reason we're including our last two - because it's easy to forget now how amazed we all were when we first encountered the T-Rex in Jurassic Park, and how impressed everybody was with Godzilla, even if the film turned out to be one of the biggest turkeys of the 1990s.
