Jai Paul - Jai Paul: Was the Jai Paul album legit? No one really knows, there were so many conflicting tales about the surprise release of the UK artist's debut in April of this year. Real or not, finished or still a work in progress, it was a brilliant record. The album was removed from the internet after Jai Paul reportedly posted it online himself, but claims later suggested the MP3s had been stolen...
Night Beds - Country Sleep: Perhaps in part thanks to Jack White, Nashville is seen as cool once again, and one of the best exports from the home of blues and rock & roll is the debut release from Winston Yellen, AKA Night Beds. From the upbeat sounds of 'Ramona' to the heartbreaking and beautiful 'Even If We Try', this needs to be heard by anyone with a sensitive side.
Juveniles - Juveniles: Where French duos are concerned, a certain pair of robots have hogged the headlines in 2013, but away from furious media scrutiny, Juveniles have proven themselves one of the coolest new bands of the year. Mixing elements of eighties pop, classic rock and seventies disco, their self-titled debut is one of the most shamelessly uplifting releases of 2013.
Swim Deep - Where The Heaven Are We: Another guitar band who've yet to make the splash (yes, that was an intentional pun) many expected, but also delivered an impressive debut album this year. From upbeat summer anthems such as 'King City' to sulty indie brilliance including 'She Changes The Water', Where The Heaven Are We is guitar pop at its 2013 best.
The Neighbourhood - I Love You: Mixing hip-hop influences with indie-band sensibilities, The Neighbourhood are one of our standout artists of 2013 - despite still awaiting their mainstream breakthrough. Rough, edgy pop from a group of streetwise Californian boys, tracks such as 'Sweater Weather' and 'Let It Go' are summer essentials on any 2013 playlist.
Disclosure - Settle: The most talked about British dance album of 2013 belonged to brothers Guy and Howard Laurence - and of course, their carefully selected album guests. Following hits such as 'Latch' with Sam Smith and 'White Noise' with AlunaGeorge was never going to be easy, but the duo never dropped the ball across their 14-track, chart-topping debut, with 'When A Fire Starts To Burn' and London Grammar track 'Help Me Lose My Mind' proving album standouts.
Jagwar Ma - Howlin: Duo Jagwar Ma have delivered one of the greatest 'Madchester' influenced albums of all time - despite hailing from, (quite literally) the other side of the world. This Australian pair crammed lad-rock swagger and soaring pop hooks into a near-flawless collection of summer-tinged tracks. The band proved they could cut it on the festival scene, becoming one of this year's must-see new bands on the circuit. A spectacular debut.
Rudimental - Home: A raucous mix of the best urban sounds in the UK, Rudimental's debut is an explosion of vibrant influences - and has unearthed some serious new talent with the collective's choice of collaborators. After soundtracking the summer of 2012 with their John Newman collaboration 'Feel The Love', Rudimental following it up with a string of hits and standout tracks featuring newcomers Foxes, Ella Eyre, MNEK.
Peace - In Love: The year of the guitar band never really happened - but boy, did we get some good albums from the bands riding the wave of hype. In Love, the debut album from Peace is one of the standouts, with classic Britpop sounds mixing with touches of nineties house. Playing their influences carefully, while always retaining their own distinct sound, if Peace can keep the standards this high, they could be the UK's next enormous band.
Bastille - Bad Blood: From blog superstars to chart topping pop success in less that 12 months, Bastille are one of the big success stories of 2013. It's down to more than just hype and a swelling fanbase, however, as the band's debut album is an absolute work of mainstream genius. Singles 'Pompeii' and 'Laura Palmer' were just the tip of the iceberg here, as the album is packed with pop gems, and in frontman Dan Smith, they have one of the most unique talents in the business.
AlunaGeorge - Body Music: Remember when r&b music used to be cool? AlunaGeorge certainly do, steering well clear of the cheap europop beats and easy hits secured from roping in a big name rapper on their debut release. This London duo to mainstream well ('Attracting Flies', You Know You Like It') but without compromising their innate sass and distinctive laid-back style.
MS MR - Secondhand Rapture: New York duo Ms Mr are one of the most talked about new pop bands of the year, thanks largely to brilliant singles 'Hurricane' and 'Think Of Me' - and the fact they have a brilliant debut album to back them up. With touches of Florence Welch in their gothic, electronic pop-rock, MS MR embark on a UK tour later in 2013, and their live show comes highly recommended.
Savages - Silence Yourself: One of the year's key rock releases, Savages are one of the darkest, hardest rocking bands on the 2013 music scene and yet have found themselves embraced by the mainstream and applauded at every turn. A refreshingly unconventional and gloom-laden album.
