Sadly, there were quite a few sexist moments to choose from
This week, determined not to allow the year to end without one more incidence of hateful misogyny, DIIV's Devin Ruben Perez called Grimes "physically repulsive" and Meredith Graves a "bitch."
Frontman Zachary Cole Smith, much to his infinite credit, said he was "disgusted", "angry" and would never tolerate sexism, homophobia, bullying or bigotry of any kind. He also asserted though, that "All media who covers this is implicated in propagating spewings of an underbelly internet culture who r numb to the violence of their words." The thing is, if we don't propogate these spewings with a critical eye, they'll carry on bubbling under the surface as the world looks away. Instead, we've decided to pile all the musical sexism of 2014 into one place, in the hopes that people are able to learn from the mistakes of Eminem, Perez, and, yes, One Direction.
Let's remind ourselves of the most unacceptable examples of sexism in the music industry in 2014, cleanse ourselves of it all, and hope that in 2015, we can't run another of these.
