A short, sweet - but oft mindless - debut

More about:

Canadian three-piece indie bedroom-rock band Dad Sports aren’t exactly a household name, but with the release of their debut EP I AM JUST A BOY LEAVE ME ALONE !!!, they are definitely trying to be.

The short but sweet album glistens by and flutters to completion almost as quickly as it begins. Keeping songs short and sweet Dad Sports are playing into the hands of their social media-damaged, attention-short fan base perfectly, with the jingly jangly songs about haircuts providing the perfect soundtrack for an Instagram feed scrolling session.

The whole of Dad Sports latest outing feels like it has been created by a musical AI designed to emulate what it thinks the indie kids of 2021 want to hear. Song titles using acronyms like “gf haircut” and “nrvs again” and lyrics on 'out 4 a breather' about meeting up after school feel a tad forced.

I AM JUST A BOY LEAVE ME ALONE !!!’s lyricism is also plagued with uninteresting and mind-numbingly dull topics to fit into a I-don’t-give-a-fuck-about-my-music vibe that is often found in the genre. This matched with the typical plucky guitar riffs that can be found all over a Boy Pablo album, can make this album hard to distinguish not only from its contemporaries but itself.

However, you do have to commend the Ottawa boys for being able to create a pleasant and enjoyable listen with personality. The album creates a warm and youthful vibe and carries it out until completion.

I AM JUST A BOY LEAVE ME ALONE !!! arrives 19 March.
