More about:

Gloucester-via-Manchester songwriter Chloe Foy has been attracting attention as far back as 2013, when her debut single ‘In The Middle of The Night’ was picked up for BBC radio play. In 2021, she closes a formative 10-year period of her life which began when she lost her father to depression – closing with the release of her debut album Where Shall We Begin.

The resulting record is exactly what one would expect from an artist who’s spent 10 years honing her craft and patiently building up to the right time to release her debut. It’s a deep, complex, and passionately-built album that will lovingly stick for a long time after listening, as if the record itself has given you a warm and compassionate hug.

Foy has created a record that sounds like it comes from another dimension: you can’t picture these songs being recorded in a studio with a band and producer on planet Earth. They seem like the soundtrack to some transcendental, heavenly introspective ether. The songs manifest in your emotions and deeply manipulate them until you're questioning your entire life, a true example of music made to have power.

The themes on this record have sadness, but also empathy and self-compassion. Stand-out track ‘Work of Art’ represents the warmth created by artists when playing music to audiences, a room where everyone’s minds are lost in the state of song. It’s these sorts of themes that causes introspective warmth on listen, but also inspire deep existential analysis.

Chloe’s heavenly angelic voice also adds to the idea that this album comes from some other mystical purgatory realm. Her playful vocals, combined with the album’s divine production work, create a full-sounding listen with extreme depth and nuance. The heavy-hitting drums combined with soothing and carefully-toned guitar perfectly accompany Foy’s beautiful vocals throughout the entire record.

Despite Chloe Foy gaining recognition back in 2013, Where Shall We Begin is just the start for her musical journey. The careful depth and nuance showcased in it create a wholesome record that inspire a plethora of emotion and deep-thought, utilising music’s true power to its fullest. 10 years in the making, it’s certainly been worth the wait.

Where Shall We Begin is out now.
