The Canadian four-piece are renowned for their blend of sombre vocals, clean guitar tones and flowery melodies, and this album assures us all that they haven’t lost their touch. While the whole world stood still during the pandemic, Peach Pit have evidently used this time to grow their sound and master their craft culminating in a beautiful album in From 2 to 3. So, let’s dig in…
Opening tracks ‘Up Granville’ and ‘Vickie’ are so fun. From the off you’re captivated by the arpeggiated guitar lick, percussive drum beats and chorus hooks...not to mention the harmonies on Neil Smith’s voice are effortlessly brilliant throughout the entire record. Mikey Pascuzzi’s drumming really shines on ‘Lips Like Yours’ and ‘Pepsi on the House’ as it kicks through the mix with the driving force tom hits and open crashes.
Somewhere between track five and six you start to feel the album transcend into a more mellow number as tracks like ‘Everything About You’ and ‘Last Days of Lonesome’ set a new tone with varied instrumentation and a deviation from their typical format. It works extremely well, maintaining Peach Pit's sound whilst offering us something fresh and exciting.
The album resolves nicely with ‘2015’ and title track ‘From 2 to 3’. The former is a head bopper for sure with jazzy drums, organs and funky guitars galore, the result of which is an all-round feel-good, summery vibe. The final track offers up a much more melancholic sound with a heavy acoustic presence, vocals drenched in reverb and swirling cymbals. A great end to a great album.
Peach Pit’s triumphant return comes as no surprise with their equally fun TikTok presence growing with a series of viral videos and behind the scenes clips. If you’re a big fan of this album you should definitely delve into their videos: if you’ve got a few hours to spare that is...you might get hooked.
