Favouring sex over politics - as so many of us do - Sebastien Tellier has channelled his craggy eroticism into a new collection of arousing synth pop – namely his new album, ‘Sexuality’. Before hitting the sumptuous venues of Europe, Tellier treated guests at Rough Trade to an advance preview of songs from ‘Sexuality’ - just to get London in the mood. The smouldering belle-bête took to the stage like a shining beacon of sexual healing, sporting a white suit and futuristic shades.
With a minimal band, Tellier begins with the uplifting ‘Divine’ followed by a few sensual numbers from the album and leading single ‘Sexual Sportswear’. His strident performance is unapologetic in the light of such a bold yet potentially comical concept album. In a concert setting, the songs gain an intensity that the heavily stylised album merely hints at. Tellier’s musings between songs break down any illusions of a mysterious modern-day Serge Gainsbourg. He is quite the charming, gallic buffoon – making reference to his poor command of ‘anglish’ and unshakable Frenchness. The lascivious meanderings of Sexuality are interrupted by a rendition of the simply perfect, ‘La Ritournelle’ - a classic from his previous album 'Politics'. Tellier’s concepts are most often supported by extraordinary song-writing and this is a poignant reminder.
Tellier’s sexual soundtrack did not sway the Rough Trade crowd into wild abandon, but - in true British style – we’re pretty sure that many decided to give it a try when they got home.
