With the release of their fourth album 'Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys', My Chemical Romance have turned their already fanatcial following into a full-flown dedicated UK fanbase, one that could fill Wembley Arena twice over.
Simply take a look around the pavements of Wembley Arena and it is littered with food, cans and abandoned sleeping bags. Over 100 of their fans camped out in the freezing February weather to make sure they were up as close as possible to their favourite New Jersey band.
As My Chemical Romance kick off their UK arena tour at London's Wembley Arena tonight it is clear that years of hard work and touring has provided them with an incredible bond between them and their fans. Maybe it's their catchy songs which run deep with their fans under-18 angst or the charismatic charm of frontman Gerad Way…who knows.
But as images of their latest album 'Danger Days' flash across the big screen even the over 30s in the audience have become excited in their seats. The curtain drops and the band open their set with the incredibly catchy 'Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na)', which is almost drowned out by the shrieks of young females. The band start as they mean to go on continuing their high paced energy all the way through their 24-song set, showcasing material from all four albums.
“It's so good to be back in the f*cking UK, it's like our second home”, frontman Gerad Way tells the crowd.
'Planetary (GO!), 'Sing' and 'Vampire Money' all taken from 'Danger Days', show how My Chemical Romance have cleverly earned themselves a whole new legion of fans without losing those of previous albums. Taking a moment to thank their fans, the red headed Way broke into fan favourites ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise), ‘Famous Last Words’ and ‘The Ghost Of You’. Other highlights included ‘Helena’, ‘Destroya’ and ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’.
After successfully bringing Danger Days to London, My Chemical Romance concluded their performance with ‘Hurt You’, the first time it’s been played since 2005.
The band continue their UK tour at Glasgow’s SECC tomorrow night (February 15).
