The first taster of a live-action remake of the animated Eighties TV series Jem and the Holograms has been released in a global trailer. Watch it below.

The premise of the Eighties TV show has been given a modern twist where protagonist Jem finds herself becoming a viral sensation on Youtube, which then rockets Jen and her sisters to global superstardom. Complications follow as their popularity rises which sees them gaining a record contract with Starlight Records and playing to fans throughout the world.

The strange thing about it is how nostalgic it all seems. Remember when someone was excited to sign to a major label? Remember when 'changing your identity' meant just getting some Kesha-esque facepaint? When people used the phrase "All the web's been talking about"? We even remember those halcyon days when One Direction's 'The Story Of My Life' was sung by a five piece?

The film is directed by Jon M. Chu who was behind the Step-Up series and stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau and Juliette Lewis. Jem and the Holograms will be released 21 December. Until then - watch the original source material below.
