The Cure’s Robert Smith has hit out at people who label him a goth, calling it ‘pitiful.’

Despite his dark attire, black hair and make up, Smith says that his band shouldn’t be tagged.

He said: “It’s is pitiful when goth is still tagged onto the name The Cure.

“We’re not categorizable. I suppose we were post punk when we came out, but in total it’s impossible.

“How can you describe a band that put out an album like ‘Pornography’ and also ‘Greatest Hits’ where every single song was top 10around the world? I just play Cure music whatever it is.”

In the interview with Reuters, Smith also revealed that he is busy at work on the band’s new album, although he is finding the process very difficult.

He added: “I want them (words) to mean something, it’s not enough that they rhyme. I find myself stopping short and thinking I’ve done this before and better.”
