Marvin Gaye's family and Sony/ATV have reached a settlement in the 'Blurred Lines' copyright lawsuit, it has been confirmed.
The lawsuit was raised after it was pointed out that there were many similarities between Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up'. Marvin Gaye's family also set sights on EMI (owned by Sony) due to the issues of intellectual property, stating that the label didn't adequately protect the rights of Gaye's back catalogue. As a result they argued that the company should lose profits from the sales of 'Blurred Lines'.
While the court case remains ongoing a first settlement has been reached between the two parties. This means that Sony/ATV will not have to defend their impartiality in the case.

However according to Billboard it may not be the be all and end all of Sony/ATV's involvement in proceedings. Now Thicke's lawyers are in a position to question Sony about why they found the two tracks not to be similar.
'Blurred Lines' was named as the biggest selling song of last year, selling 1.44 million copies in the UK alone. Refusing to go away it also left its mark due to its lurid content that was widely regarded to be sexist, resulting in bans at over 20 universities.
