Artist's Albums Of 2008: Dananananaykroyd

The Scottish sextet tells us about their favourite records of the year...

Over the next few days Gigwise will be speaking to a number of artists about their favourite albums of 2008. First up is Glaswegian six piece Dananananaykroyd with each member picking out five records that have soundtracked their year.

Calum

Venetian Snares - Detrimentalist
This guy just slays me. His bazillionth record in 8 years, in about as many genres; this time, old-school rave samples collide with razor-sharp breakbeats to form a SPHERE OF EXCELLENCE.

Fucked Up - The Chemistry Of Common Life

Epic hardcore gone prog shoegaze. One of those albums you have to listen to all the way through. Probably for fear of getting a row off of Pink Eyes if you don't.

Desalvo - Mood Poisoner

I simply love this band, and cannot stop listening to this hugely powerful juggernaut - oh wait, the HEADACHES

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

Amidst all the hype (from what I can see, anyway) lies a pretty stunning pop record with lilting harmonies and all the rest. Reminds me of wombs and a biscuit.

Stereolab - Chemical Chords
Another fantastic album, with immediately catchy melodies and "Oh man I wish I could think of that" moments all over it's jittery face.

John

Mr OIZO - Lamb's Anger
I've been following Mr OIZO for a few years and its great to have a full length from him again, this one is made up mostly of glitched up disco, rave stabs and bad slap bass and saxophone keyboards.

Rex The Dog - The Rex the Dog Show
When Rex was 16 years old he was called JX and had a world wide hit called "theres nothing i wont do" ("..anything you want me to, i cant keep my hands off you"). Now he is a lesson is synth production and completely blinding pop tunes.

Jaguar Love - Highways of Gold
Everything Johnny Whitney touches turns to gold, in this case manifested in weird pirate soul indie.

Metronomy - Night's Out
Jittery electro-pop, but better than that. It sounds like the 70s and like post punk or something ..with alien robot women doing back vocals.

Dutch Uncles - Takeover
We played with this manchester band on tour in the autumn and i've not been as excited by a band in ages. i want to mash them all up in a cup and devour them - check them out!

Duncan

Los Campesinos! - We are Beautiful, We Are Doomed
Whether it's an EEP or an album isn't important, they're the most exciting band I've heard in decades. It's enough to make me feel stupid and young again. An album which just gets better and better once you've learnt all the words to sing along.

Hot Club de Paris - Live At Dead Lake
They make everything sound so effortless, switching from explosive to reflective, I really enjoy how much their personalities shine through, and "Hey Housebrick" should've been a number 1 single.

The Futureheads - This Is Not the World
A great example of superb art appearing from trying times. It's like they remembered exactly who they are as a band. Plus one song sounds a bit like Andrew WK, and that'll always please me.

Why? - Alopecia
I'm endlessly disappointed in Beck's spiral into dull music, remember those good times? Anyway, this is exactly where he should be right now - lazily sung lyrics, amusing on many levels, over catchy pop songs. It feels like a loose stream of consciousness, but to be this good he's either a messy lofi god, or a great editor,

Triple School - Triple School =2
I enjoy pretty much everything Giles does (which is why I made him join Dananananaykroyd early on) and this is Coachwhips / Billy Childish affair, with songs about how great it'd be to be in Slayer. You can stop copying and pasting these into slsk now, this is available for free from the winning sperm party website.
