2009 promises to be a big year in music. We can sweep away the disappointments of 2008 (Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs) and look forward to the returns of some of Music’s brightest names (Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys). Glastonbury is shaping up nicely, Blur have already confirmed a reunion and it looks like a bumper year for emerging talent.

So without further a-do here are my top 10 albums I’m looking forward to in 2009. I decided to sprinkle it with some new names, some old and a healthy number of crucial 2nd albums, enjoy

1) Baddies

If you haven’t heard ‘Battleships’ by this Essex lot yet you’d best pop onto their Myspace because they’re about to make 2009 their own. The vocals sound like Klaxons would if they hailed from Southend and their ultra catchy choruses have seen them top the Myspace chart on MTV2. Currently awaiting their big break it’s only a matter of time before Baddies crank up the New Year hype machine.

2) Esser

Having already signed up to support the Kaiser Chiefs on their monster New Year tour, Ben Esser (or just Esser) is set to release his debut album. Another member of the blossoming Essex scene, his debut singles ‘Headlock’ and ‘Satisfied’ have left fans yearning for more. The music is pure pop but with an electro twist which should play well considering the next album I’m looking forward to is….

3) Klaxons

2009 is a big year for the Klaxons. Can they recreate the joyous days of 2007 and sell millions or will they disappoint and, well, sell millions anyway? Critically their debut album was put atop a throne and worshipped, but surely this sets them up to fail? I personally think they’ll whip the pants off 2009 and reinvent Technicolor body paint as the must have item of the year – but we can only wait and see.

4) Green Day

It’s been a while since ‘American Idiot’. 51 months and 2 days if you’re counting. So I expect Green Day to produce something bloody awesome when they finally release their LONG-awaited new album. Butch Vig is producing and Billy Joe seems confident it will be a success. Like Klaxons it will sell millions regardless but the real challenge is convincing the critics it can match or outstrip their 2004 effort.

5) The View

The View were on fire in 2007. Now they’ve petered out, so what better way to restart that blaze than with a new album. ‘Which Bitch?’ isn’t the most artistic title but judging by ‘5 Rebbecca’s’ and ‘Shock Horror’ it’s more of the same with sing-along choruses and plenty of Libertines guitar thrown in. Those thick Scottish vocals will be back with us in February.

6) Jack Butler

I am told by Jack Butler’s manager that this album will be “the nuts”. Having featured in the Indie charts for their debut single ‘Velvet Prose’ and managed to play on the emerging stage at T in the Park in 2007 the Stirling 4 piece will hope for take off in 2009. Latest single ‘Are you a Hustler?’ is a frantic ride inspired by early Bloc Party and might I add is well worth a listen, you might even consider it “the nuts”.

7) Franz Ferdinand

I want to hear this album for the sheer fact it’s taken so long! Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t realise Franz Ferdinand albums were so complex it takes three and a half years to make. Ok so maybe I’m being a bit harsh, this does promise to be a dance floor filling album for the duration of 2009. The band’s insight that it will feature many African influences could make for a fascinating result.

8) Arctic Monkeys

According to the band their album is nearly complete and they are readying themselves for an assault on 2009. Realistically the only way is down after 2 near perfect attempts beforehand but I have a sneaky feeling they might just raise their game again and top every ‘best album of 2009’ list there is. Their Josh Homme produced sessions might change their focus from chavs to deserts but the golden boys will surely produce in 2009.

9) MGMT

Ok so this isn’t confirmed but apparently they’re going to record album number two in January and go for a summer 2009 release. It’s as if sound-tracking Glastonbury 2008 wasn’t enough, now they want 2009 too. And wouldn’t it be awesome to see MGMT and Arctic Monkeys battling it out for critical acclaim? It would be the ultimate lyrical battle between magical acid-tinged idealism and grimey, chav filled realism.

10) Blur?

Nothing’s confirmed and Coxon and Albarn have barely finished their comeback interviews but wouldn’t it be nice to finally see a follow up to 2003’s ‘Think Tank’. Hyde Park is ready to go and Glastonbury seems inevitable right now so why not earn that comeback money properly with some new material? If Oasis can keep doing it for all these years there’s no reason why their old adversaries can’t!

So there you have it, if you’ve laboured through 2008 waiting for something brilliant and never got it, this is 10 reasons why 2009 might be a bit better!
