Soulwax have an illustrious history of remixing some of the untouchable legends of music, putting their sonic touches to the likes of the The Rolling Stones' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', David Bowie's 'Rebel Rebel' and Daft Punk's 'Robot Rock' but to only name a few. Now this could either be very foolish, or very courageous. However, one listen to the superb remix of Beethoven's Fifth symphony should put aside any doubts of tackling masters of musical composition.
Now the Belgian Duo have turned themselves to the difficult task of remixing a track from the critically-acclaimed indie band 'Arcade Fire'. It's often difficult to picture the bouncing synths and hypnotic disco vibes of Soulwax cascading next to the emotional vocals of Arcade Fire's fearless frontwoman Regine Chassagne, but in typical Soulwax fashion – unusual combinations are their forte.
Soulwax's “Sprawl II” accomplishes the feat that few remixers are able to: instead of hijacking a track and transforming it into a completely alien entity, this sonic delight seems to build on the unique sounds of Arcade Fire to highlight the brilliant talents of both groups. With spiralling beats, swirling waves of luscious synth and euphoric claps, this is a bouncy and distinctive tribute to the alternative-rock band.
