From soft to heavy...to landfill

Who said Spooktober was the only time the rock industry thrived? We’ve pieced together 13 of the greatest metal love songs for you to spin this Valentine's weekend. Some are old, some are new, some are soft, some are heavy...and one is landfill.

Thank us later.

Evanescence – ‘Taking Over Me’

At number 13 we have the queen of emo, Amy Lee, with ‘Taking Over Me.’ Sat as the eight track on Evanescence’s debut studio album, Amy Lee pours her heart out in this number as she details the agonising pain of a heartache.

Lamb of God – ‘Walk with Me in Hell’

Virginian heavy metal piece, Lamb of God dropped this colossal tune back in 2006. Standing as the introductory to their mammoth fifth studio album Sacrament. What could be more romantic than one of your favourite bands asking you to walk the fiery depths of hell by their side?

Papa Roach – ‘Scars’

This song is the epitome of an emo ballad as Jacoby Shaddix sings, “I tear my heart open, I sold myself short, my weakness is, I care too much.” From the lyrics to the music video, this absolute anthem is the peak of that 2000’s sad-emo moment.

Bullet For My Valentine – ‘Bittersweet Memories’

It would be genuinely illegal to write this piece without debuting some acknowledgement to our boys, Bullet For My Valentine. And what better way than to bring up their absolutely melodramatic anthem ‘Bittersweet Memories.’ We absolutely love this track, and the music video is a complete worldie. In, ‘Bittersweet Memories’ Matthew Tuck sings an emotive piece about ending an unhealthy relationship with a heavy break-up.

Loathe – ‘Is it Really You?’

Loathe are an imperative heavy metal band people should be onto right now. Having dropped their debut studio albu, I Let It in and It Took Everything last year, it has since been very apparent just how much the group have to offer. This stomping album is fixed with such an amazing tracklist of 14 notable tracks. ‘Is it Really You,’ is this empowering, heavy as fuck, progressive track that gets you right in your feels.

Nine Inch Nails – ‘Closer’

‘Closer’ is such a sensual, distorted bop – certainly more lustful than loving. But I think this can definitely pass for an essential love song this Valentines weekend.

Bring Me The Horizon – ‘Fifteen Fathoms, Counting’

This short interlude is criminally angelic, and it’s with this do we have to accept that it is an undeniable love song. Absolutely love this track, and this stage of Bring Me The Horizon - consisting of hellish screamo vocals and breakneck riffs. What a time.

6.Deftones – ‘RX Queen’

Deftones, ‘RX Queen,’ comes off their 2000, third studio album White Pony. It's a twisted love song, with Chino singing: "cause you’re my girl, and that’s alright. If you sting, I won’t mind.” A fair few of Deftones' love songs have this tone to them, creating this balance of flickering between light to dark tendencies.

Rammstein – ‘Diamant’

It might seem slightly controversial to mention such a new Rammstein track on this list but ‘Diamant’ is a strong one. Chorus line translated, “you’re beautiful like a diamond, pretty to watch, like a diamond. But, please, let me go, what a force, what a shine, beautiful like a diamond, but only a stone.” We absolutely fell in love with this track when I heard it on their latest self-titled album.

Slipknot – ‘Snuff’

‘Snuff,’ is a beautiful love song that gives you Corey Taylor’s alternative vocal, and it’s so gentle and soft, amongst nonchalant acoustics. But what’s so great about ‘Snuff’ is that it’s still very staple Slipknot, punching you with such a massive instrumental and progressive chorus.

Skunk Anansie – ‘Weak’

The ULTIMATE break-up song, in at number three is the queen herself Skunk Anansie with her ’95 love song ‘Weak.’ This song is honestly so powerful, as frontwoman Skin – birth name, Deborah Anne Dyer - vocalises some of the harshest realities of dealing with a sticky breakup. You can’t help but wonder who did our girl dirty.

Three Days Grace – ‘I Hate Everything About You’

At number two we have the iconic Three Days Grace with ‘I Hate Everything About You.’ With lyrics that follow, “why do I love you?” I’m pretty sure every emo kid checked out that Three Days Grace One-X album, and to be honest, it was a sweet compilation of a lot of pent-up anger spread across thirteen tracks. ‘I Hate Everything About You,’ believe it or not, is indeed a love song, and certified banger. You’ve heard of indie landfill, now you’ve stepped into metal landfill.

Bring Me The Horizon – ‘Can You Feel My Heart’

This song is an actual masterpiece. Sempiternal is easily one of Bring Me’s best albums, next up to Count Your Blessings and their latest, Post Human: Survival Human. ‘Can You Feel My Heart,’ no matter how many times you listen to it, or how long you go without, will always go off.
