'We found that the music we liked playing the most were our darker, more driving tracks'

Deep Tan is a terrific band you should tell everyone you know about. This is the band you play in your car with your friends; down at the pub; spinning at the after-party.

From their tracks such as 'Deep Fake' to 'Shimmer' and 'Constant Inconstencies', to their newer creeping speedwells EP cuts 'Camelot' and 'hollow scene', Wafah, Celeste and Lucy are always experimenting with new and unique sounds.

Now gearing up to release their first ever EP this June, the band are also getting ready to perform in front of crowds for the first time in over a year.

We got the chance to chat with Deep Tan about their upcoming EP and what they miss the most about being on tour.

Gigwise: As teens, what artists and songs helped shape how you write your music or perform?

Deep Tan: In our teens, one of the things we all gravitated towards was leftfield, alternative rock and indie music. It’s given us a foundation of influences that we all share and draw on when we’re writing. Our teen mixtapes were made up of music by The Cure, PJ Harvey, The Fall, Lou Reed, Joy Division, Gang Of Four, Suicide, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Elliot Smith, Patti Smith. The Smiths! All the Smiths.

GW: How long would you say it took you all to find your sound as a trio?

DT: About a year. Our first release, ‘air’, was written before we’d played live together. It has a layered, atmospheric sound because of how it was written and recorded: in the studio. When we started playing live together, we found that the music we liked playing the most were our darker, more driving tracks.

GW: You essentially made a meme about 21 June on your track 'camelot'. What is something you all miss because of the Covid-19 pandemic?

DT: There are so many things we could put here but Drag Brunch at Dalston Superstore is right up there.

GW: Your Creeping Speedwells EP is coming soon this summer, in the form of hashtags; how would you describe how excited you are for this EP?

DT: #so #fucking #excited #likeyouwouldntbelieve #creepingspeedwells #preordernow #lmao

GW: As you’re gearing up to finally perform in person again this summer, what’s something you all missed about live performances?

DT: The slab of rider beer sitting in the green room that’s inevitably warmed to room temperature.

GW: What can fans expect to hear from the EP - or to expect from Deep Tan in general?

DT: We haven’t explored much psych in the music we’ve already released, but the new EP has an aspect of that. We were listening to a lot of German experimental bands at the time of recording, like Amon Düül, CAN, Tangerine Dream and Kluster, as well as quite a lot of prog. Some of the EP shares a similar a energy, which is new territory for us.

creeping speedwells arrives 4 June via Practise Music.
