The White Stripes frontman Jack White has admitted lying about his relationship with his band mate Meg White as he didn’t believe critics would take a former married couple seriously.
Jack insisted that Meg was his sister for years, but a Detroit newspaper discovered in 2002 that the couple were married in 1996 and printed their wedding certificate.
Jack still believes that that particular lie was ness cry on their road to success, he said recently to Rolling Stone:
"It's funny that people think me and Meg sit up late at night, in front of a gas lamp, and come up with these intricate lies to trick people.
"If we had presented ourselves in another fashion... how would we have been perceived, right off the bat? When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think, 'Oh, I see...'
"When they're brother and sister, you go, 'Oh, that's interesting.' You care more about the music, not the relationship."
Right...
The White Stripes fantastic new single ‘My Doorbell’ is out now.
