The Who have been announced as the third and final Glastonbury headliners, with support from Paul Weller.
The band will be performing at the festival eight years after their first appearance.
“It’s great to be ending this part of a 50 year career at the most prestigious and respected music festival in the world," said Roger Daltrey of the announcement. "We'll do our best to close this years event with a bang, unless of course the fireworks get wet!”
Also joining the festival will be Paul Weller: who it will be interesting to see how much of his excellent new material Saturn's Pattern he debuts live.
The announcement today is not perhaps as surprising given that The Sun reported the news about the headliner choice on Saturday. The newspaper quotes a source as saying: "The Who booking has been kept quiet because the band are also playing a Hyde Park gig for the British Summer Time festival so the announcement will be made in a few weeks. The band are still one of the best live groups and are currently on their 50th-anniversary tour, so it’s bound to be an amazing show."
Without question the most high profile festival in the calendar, this year's Glastonbury is arguably it's most musically diverse yet. Joining the previously announced headliners of Foo Fighters and Kanye West (as well as the almighty Lionel Ritchie) are some huge names including Florence & The Machine, Alt J, Motorhead, Mary J Blige, Patti Smith and the Chemical Brothers.
As one might expect from the organisers of Worthy Farm, there are a huge number of surprises and delights. In terms of Gigwise favourites the following are all set to appear: Hozier, Sleaford Mods, Maccabees, Years & Years, Ryan Adams, Rae Morris, Enter Shikari, Ibeyi, George Ezra, Kate Tempest. As Emily Eavis also teased Courtney Barnett and Father John Misty are both on the bill: both will have a very good summer.
In terms of living legends, George Clinton is going to be touching down, as well Sparks (with Franz Ferdinand) and Mavis Staples. Hip-hop is well catered for with Run The Jewels, Azealia Banks and Young Fathers and dance music will see acts including DeadMau5, Rudimental, Jungle, Flying Lotus, Jon Hopkins. All this plus indie favourites (Suede, Belle & Sebastian, The Waterboys) and jazz torchbearers (Lianne Las Havas, Jessie Ware and Gregory Porter.) There has already been much delight that the once banned The Fall are featured on this year's bill.
Glastonbury 2015 takes place at Worthy Farm from 24 - 28 June.
