The Charlatans just played a surprise set at Glastonbury 2015, kicking off the first official day of the festival.

Taking to The Other Stage at 11am, the Brit pop icons drew a huge and receptive crowd from the offset, despite the threat of rain, reeling off a string of hits from across their illustrious discography.

Effortlessly switching up between cuts from their back catalogue and newer, arguably more subdued tracks from their acclaimed 2015 album Modern Nature, the group's stunning 45 minute performance provided the perfect start to the first official day of music.

Stage patter from floppy-haired frontman Tim Burgess was minimal but affecting throughout, with the group clearly overwhelmed by the response from the early-morning audience.

Understandably, favourites like 'How High', 'The Only One I Know', and 'Tellin' Stories' drew the fondest response, but it was a euphoric rendition of 'Sproston Green' to close the set that seamlessly proved why in 2015, The Charlatans are just as vital as ever.

This appearance was one of many secret sets taking place around Glastonbury over the weekend, with Wolf Alice and Drenge performing unannounced in The William's Green tent last night (25 June), and the likes of Bastille and Frank Turner also set to play intimate shows today.

It was also revealed this morning that a 'special guest' will be playing before Florence and the Machine on the pyramid stage tonight between 8:20 - 9:30.

The Libertines are currently rumoured to fill the spot, after Emily Eavis stated this morning that the group in question had not played the festival's main stage before.
