When the US state of North Carolina passed a regressive, transphobic bill into law, many artists cancelled performances there as a show of solidarity. Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, though, took a different approach.
“[Cancelling the show] will only hurt the fans and the people who have already bought tickets,” said the musician, who came out as transgender back in 2012. As such, she chose a different way of protesting the bill - which requires trans people to use the public bathroom which corresponds with the assigned gender on their birth certificate, and also limits how people can sue for discrimination in state court.
So Laura Jane Grace decided to publicly burn her own birth certificate onstage in Durham, North Carolina, saying “Goodbye, gender” as she did so.
I guess gender really is over since @LauraJaneGrace said goodbye to gender! #genderisover pic.twitter.com/EHXZJbMnM2
