David Bowie's drummer from the Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars era had harsh words for Lady Gaga, weighing-in on her Grammy Awards tribute to the singer, saying it was 'tacky'. Ouch.
Speaking to NME, Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey spoke of his disinterest when he was presented with the idea “We looked at it and it was going to be like 14 or 15 songs in the space of four minutes”. The drummer went on to claim the tribute didn't come across as 'heartfelt'. "...we just went, ‘No, fuck off, that’s stupid, that’s not going to represent anything good about him.’” Woodmansey said after considering taking part.
With help from Nile Rogers, Lady Gaga powered through a medley of Bowie's back catalouge at the GRAMMY Awards ceremony earlier this year as she took to the stage dressed in Bowie's iconic Ziggy Stardust outfit. Hits such as 'Starman' 'Let's Dance' 'Rebel Rebel' 'Fame' 'Fashion' and many more were shoe-horned into the performance.
The tributee was faced with a backlash of criticism, most notably from Bowie's son Duncan Jones who branded the performance as 'overexcited' 'excessive' and 'mentally confused', with Gaga recently responding to his words, stating "it hurt"
"..it’s his father, you know. Whatever he was feeling in that moment I have compassion and love for him. But yes, of course it hurt. I still have to trust and believe in myself as a Bowie fan. I’m not his family, and the thing is, that’s his father. His father is not David Bowie, his father is David Jones.
