The XX have unveiled the video to the video to 'On Hold', the first single from their forthcoming album, I See You. You can watch it on Gigwise below.
In a little over two weeks, the audio to 'On Hold' has racked up nearly 3 million views. It's a brilliant collage of atmospheric ambient soundscapes, and sweet R&B tinged vocals. They sound much more confident and upbeat than the desolate stark beauty of 2012's Coexist but there's still an underlying darkness.
The video was shot in Marfa, Texas, where the band wrote and recorded some of I See You, and is directed by acclaimed filmmaker and photographer Alasdair McLellan.
The video beautifully portrays the heatrbreak that's written about in the song, with a scene of young lovers besotted with each other, followed by the sad contrast of them growing apart.
The scenery chosen is that of a lot of Hollywood movie staples. There's a dusky sunsets on the horizon, a raucous house party with red cups, and an American sports field where cheer leading and American Football's happening. Despite utilising some cliché's, it does suit the song and is as beautifully thought out as the recording.
Elsewhere, The xx have set the record for the longest ever run of sold out shows at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. The trio will take over the legendary venue from 8th-15th March, performing to 35,000 people over seven hometown shows.
