Some songs are just so lush you can’t help walking up to a hilltop overlooking Rome at sunset to them. Or so acclaimed Welsh newcomer Meilyr Jones believes, as he wanders wistfully up Gianicolo hill at dusk to admire the vista in the video for his new single ‘Be Soft' which you can watch via Vimeo
Taken from last year’s Welsh Music Prize-winning debut album ‘2013’, Meilyr’s fourth single is a gorgeously dusky piece of horn-led chamber balladry recalling Bacharach and Scott Walker, and perfectly suits Jones’ winsome wander above Rome, a city that has played a major part in launching his solo career. Fleeing to the Italian capital after the break-up of his band Race Horses and a relationship, Jones was inspired to put together a 30-piece orchestra to record his solo debut, which brimmed with the city’s influence in tracks such as ‘Rome’ and ‘Rain In Rome’. The single is a precursor to a short UK tour in March ahead of a series of shows at SXSW and an appearance at the Bluedot festival in Manchester in July.
