Lorde has revealed her new album Melodrama will be released on 16 June, and has released new track 'Liability' to celebrate. You can listen to the new track in full on Gigwise below.

It's a stripped back affair, featuring Lorde's beautiful voice, and a piano exclusively. It gradually builds in intensity as it's an emotional song, and naturally the musicians respond to it. Its lack of heavy beats or complicated production help give space for her lyrics to stand out. 'Liability' can't help substantiate Lorde's supreme musical talent, and why David Bowie was so fascinated by her ability.

The contrast between the dramatic soundscapes of 'Green Light', and this less extravagant, but no less emotionally intense track, hint at the exciting variety of moods Melodrama may have.

Thematically, it's a deeply introspective cut and deals with the crushing impact of a relationship disintegrating, with imagery of loneliness best captured in the final line: "They're going to watch me disappear into the sun."

Speaking about the track with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 today (9 March) Lorde said: I had this realization that because of my lifestyle and what I do for work there’s going to be a point with every single person around me where I’m gonna be attacks on them in some way. If it is having to give up a little portion of their privacy or their life becoming more difficult or whatever."

But it isn't entirely sad, there's a triumphant emotional breakthrough: "I was like, you know what, I'm always gonna have myself so I have to really nurture this relationship and feel good about hanging out with myself and loving myself."

Her personal reflections correlate to what she tweeted in January: “I truly believe in the necessity of cathartic pop records in times like these – I love the big sprawling projects too, but there’s something about the falls & lifts of meticulous pop, moments designed for u to feel what u need to, that’s more important than ever. You’re probably guessing what kind of record I’ve made based on these tweets.”

Last week the singer released 'Green Light', which heightened our excitement for the album as it lived up to the expectation that she could put out another pop banger.

It amassed two billion impressions on Twitter alone within its first 24 hours hype and is an extraordinary hit. It also went straight on the Radio 1 A-list, Radio X and Virgin Radio. The video has clocked up a staggering 18 Million views on You Tube and 1.5m streams in the UK.
