Guns N’Roses guitarist Richard Fortus has teased the band’s long-suffering fans with the news that the band have been “assembling ideas” for a possible new album. That’s right: a new album. Well, a possible new album.
Of course, anyone who knows anything about Guns N’Roses isn’t going to hold their breath in excitement (unless they want to pass out) – this is the band whose last album, Chinese Democracy, came out in 2008, hot on the heels of a successful 15 year recorded absence since the release of the covers album, ‘The Spaghetti Incident’. Betcha can’t wait, eh?
But hey, stranger things have happened. Original members Slash and Duff McKagen rejoined the band for the first time in two decades.
Fortus, who as a member of the band since 2002 makes him a longer-serving cohort of Axl Rose than either Slash or McKagen, told the StageLeft podcast (via Alternative Nation), said that the idea of a new album was “too good not to happen.”
He said: “We haven’t started recording anything, when I say that, as far as in the studio doing an album. We’ve been recording a lot of stuff, just ideas, assembling ideas, but not going into a studio and actually tracking a new record.”
He added: “It’s sort of too good not to happen at this point, that’s how I feel about it. This band is really a force right now, and I definitely hope that we do, and I think we’re all sort of counting on it, and we’re also planning on it.”
Fortus also went on to praise Axl Rose’s songwriting talents. He said: “I think the genius of Axl is his ability to assemble songs, from different parts, and make them feel cohesive as a song. I’ve never seen anybody able to do that in the same way.”
The partially re-united Guns N’Roses hit the London Stadium for two dates later this month on June 16 and 17. Post punk godheads Killing Joke support Guns N'Roses on two of the European dates and you can read our all-new interview with Killing Joke bassist Youth here.
