It comes to something when “Rickrolling” actually involves the one and only Rick Astley – and Foo Fighters are the ones instigating it. The rock titans invited the 80s pop superstar onstage at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan to perform Astley’s 1987 Number 1 hit, ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.

Astley’s appearance with Foo Fighters was as much a surprise to the 80s singer as it was to the audience.
“Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome our new best friend, Rick Astley?” announced Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl. “This is fucking crazy. I just met him two minutes ago!”
No slouch in the swearing stakes himself, Astley shouted: “Come on, you motherfuckers!”
The newly made friends then launched into a version of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, complete with undertones of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ – an obvious nod to DJ Morgoth’s notorious 2009 mash-up of the two tracks.
Dave Grohl’s assessment of the team-up? “Fucking nuts!” the Foos frontman said at the finish and the pair later appeared on the band’s Twitter feed with the hashtag “Ournewbestfriend”.
