One of Elbow’s core strengths has always been to take seemingly mundane and prosaic matters and somehow elevate them into not only something special but also into the kind of widescreen panoramic vistas that belie their subject matter.
Remember ‘Station Approach’ from Leaders Of The Free World wherein the simple act of returning home in the wake of a relationship break-up can seem like the most important thing in the world? Or the simple joy of falling in love that was so brilliantly captured in the anthemic ‘One Day Like This’? These are all every day things but the devil’s in the detail and it’s precisely these details and Guy Garvey’s eye for them that ensure that the humdrum is of vital importance to each and every one of us.
And now they’ve done it again with some extra help in the form of 'Pale Green Ghosts' singer John Grant with this re-recorded version of ‘Kindling’, the final track from Elbow’s seventh studio album, Little Fictions. Again, it’s the everyday that informs this track – in this case a simple phone call that evokes love lost and love gained. With Grant on call-and-response vocal duties with frontman Guy Garvey and the band delivering a sparse, yet heartfelt backing, Elbow have proved themselves masters of their craft once again.
Doubtless you’ll be able to luxuriate in this favourite-to-be when Elbow hit the road in March when they play London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, September 7, and you can get them here.
