Universal Music Group is to sue Myspace over what it says is the stealing of Intellectual property by users of the site.
The company filed a lawsuit in California on Friday claiming that Myspace’s owners News Corp had allowed users to illegally upload videos and had also taken part in the infringement by reformatting the videos for the site.
In a statement the labelled said: "The foundation of MySpace is its so-called 'user-generated content.' However, much of that content is not 'user-generated' at all.”
“Rather, it is the 'user-stolen' intellectual property of others, and MySpace is a willing partner in that theft."
The label put damages for each copyright infringement at $150,000.
- where there’s a hit, there’s a writ.
- As if Myspace hasn’t helped EVERYONE’s record sales...
- ... yeah but still, anything attacking Rupert Murdoch is fine by me. Do you not think, however, that $150k is a bit of a high sum for somebody who pretty much owns the entire fucking world?! He wipes his bloated ass with that measly amount of money every morning. Still, it means that 6 bottom-end staff at New Corp towers are out of a job and now cant feed their wives and six kids. Just so long as it doesn’t come out of ol’ Rupes pocket it’ll be alright.
- Its $150,000 per individual copyright infringement so the thing could run into billions!
- myspace is byespace!
