Murder By Death - ‘Brother’ (Cooking Vinyl) Released 19/02/07

As we all know the only way to get a record deal nowadays is to sing songs about chip shops and convince people you know Arctic Monkeys. The more ‘real’ and ‘gritty’ your lyrics are, the more you will sell. Singing about what you know is not a crime but imagine if what you knew was gun slinging, bar fights, riding horses and drinking in bars where the drinks are slid down the bar to you. Now that would be exciting! Murder By Death sing about life, just not as we know it. ‘Brother’ might as well be wearing a Stetson and riding a horse; it’s that rootin’ tootin’ Southern fried. “So brother raise another pint, start up the engine and rive off into the night. See you somewhere some place some time, I know there is better brothers but you’re the only one of mine”. Get on your dancing shoes this ain’t. Adam Turla’s voice sounds scarred by emotion and stories that he conveys in a believable way with a dirty south backing courtesy of an acoustic guitar, strings and manic drumming.

Murder By Death aren’t here to mess around. They have come to take your women, beat you at cards and probably smash a stool over your back. They can probably even spit into a bin and make it make that ‘Ting!’ noise.
