Dogs – ‘This Stone Is A Bullet’ (Weekender) Released 26/03/07

starstarno starno starno star

If the recently reformed Jam are still needing a replacement vocalist then they could worse then give Johnny Cooke a call. As always, his .php of a vocal manages to evoke memories of a young Paul Weller, while 'This Stone Is A Bullet' is an aggressive punky number along the lines of Eton Rifles. Unfortunately, it is no more than a pale imitation, lacking any real fire or lyrical wit. It judders along without ever really going anywhere, even throwing a thrashy guitar solo into the mix near the end.

This is utterly disposable and suggests Dogs are still performing the same schtick they were back when they first appeared in 2005, that being straightforward no frills speedy punk that lacks depth and subtlety. But this time they seem to be devoid of a melody. Cooke’s vocals at least have a rawness that catches the ear but that good impression is washed away by the slapdash nature of everything else. If this is the best that Dogs can offer it might be best that they’re put down.

  • what tripe you talk. this single blasts in the face of the so called ’indie punk’ sounds that are being fed into the music system as of late. dont tell me...you just love the repetitive one liner tracks from the likes of snowpatrol that do the indie scene no favours whatsoever. wake up!

  • Accusing a punk rock band of sacrificing catchy melody for rawness is unfair. I think your observation that the single is ”straightforward, no frills, speedy punk that lacks depth and subtlety” (I put some commas in there for you) might be seen as an accidental compliment. I’ve always liked how Dogs’ music was served neat, without a frilly chorus to help you wash down the inane lyrics. Your final line might be clever but I must disagree entirely.

  • well, i totally agree with the reveiw, but i wouldn’t suggest that these prancing hair-cuts are punk, unless ’punk’ is now a yoof-speek euphemism for shit. this single blasts in the face of so called indie punk does it? can you quantify this with some examples please? i don’t know why i bother really, you 2 are obviously totally beyond help.
