The veteran band is caught at the peak of its powers

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are set to return in all their dapper finery with the release of a brand new live EP. ‘Distant Sky – Live In Copenhagen’ will be released on 28 September.

As anyone who’s ever caught the band in action will attest, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are one of the most intense live bands you’re likely to witness. Indeed, they’re the kind of band that will spark off lengthy pub debates as to what period of their long and turbulent history is the best. The early Berlin days? The Let Love In era of the mid-90s? That 2004 Brixton gig with Mercury Rev in the support slot? Blimey! Take your pick!

But back to the EP. Recorded at Copenhagen’s Royal Arena in October 2017 and available as a digital download and 12” vinyl, the latter option shows some pretty canny sequencing. Side A features latter day songs ‘Jubilee Street’ and ‘Distant Sky’ while Side B ramps up the pace with long-time live favourites ‘From Her To Eternity’ and ‘The Mercy Seat’. Here’s a sneak peak of what’s coming your way:

It’s certainly something to look forward to. Earlier this year, we went off to see the concert movie Distant Sky and noted how the older material was continually evolving:

“One of the more satisfying aspects of Distant Sky is noting how The Bad Seeds’ music refuses to stand still. The menace of ‘Jubilee Street’ is methodically and incrementally increased with skill, while established favourite ‘The Mercy Seat’ is anything but predictable, its denouement every bit as awful and profound as when you first heard it. This is thanks to The Bad Seeds’ careful and heartfelt playing that breathes new life into the material.”
