Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney's Black Keys have shared new track ‘Lo/Hi’ – it’s the first new music from the band since 2014.
Some of the most prominent variables that go into its sumptuous whole are a gospel backing choir, cranked ZZ-Top riffs, an albeit-brief-burst-but-still-brilliant Angus Young-esque solo you can lose yourself to; and an understated, coolly restrained rhythm section. The track sounds like it’ll be a staple on rock radio for years to come and truly is up there, in terms of production, with the classic cuts crafted by the godfathers of rock ‘n’ roll. It was produced in collaboration with Allen Parker at Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville.
It's refreshing to see Dan Auerbach back on the cover of the music he's making. He's sat in the shadows on the production credits of plenty of brilliant music - not least the awesome new Night Beats album Myth Of A Man - in the time since they last put an album in 2014.
Auerbach's also founded a label in 2017 called Easy Eye Sound. Its roster includes: Yola, Shannon & The Clams, Dee White, Shannon Shaw, Sonny Smith, Robert Finley, and The Gibson Brothers; it also has released previously unreleased material by Link Wray and the posthumous album by legendary bluesman Leo "Bud" Welch.
Meanwhile, fellow Black Key, the bespectacled Patrick Carney has produced and recorded the likes of Calvin Johnson, Tobias Jesso Jr., and created the theme music BoJack Horseman with his late uncle, Ralph Carney.
No news of a new album has been confirmed in the latest press release but it is eagerly awaited by fans.
