The follow up to Peter Doherty's excellent solo album Hamburg Demonstrations, which is in fact the self-titled debut album by Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres, is nearing. Set for release on 26 April, it's the first full length in nearly three years from The Libertines singer. But we needn't wait until the end of the month to get more of a taste: The second single to be let out ahead of the album release - 'Paradise Is Under Your Nose' - is streaming today on Gigwise below.
Similarly to the only other track released ahead of the album - 'Who's Been Having You Over'; and the rest of the album which is till under wraps - it was recorded live, as a band, in a family home in Normandy which overlooks the fishing village of Etretat and subsequently the English Channel. The environs, perhaps, attributing to its pleasingly atmospheric tone. And in a world where layering over a click to sound metronomically tight and wearing headphones in a booth is often favoured by bands, it's great to see The Puta Madres have made record with a love of the process and capture emotions in real time. Doherty, indeed, is a Renaissance man and collects typewriters, reads a wealth of old literature and poetry, and so it's very much in his personality to carry the band forward this way.
As for the track's feel, it's less of a rabble rouser than the first track and invites the listener to lean in closer to hear something intimate and profound. It's the first track that sees Swansea-born Trampolene singer Jack Jones, who has been on guitar duty for The Puta Madres for the past couple of years, take lead vocals on a recording with Doherty. After the first few lines sung by Doherty it's Jones' captivating energy that resonates loudest.
With just over three weeks to go before the album comes out, the Puta Madres have already, on this campaign, toured the UK and played a smattering of shows around mainland Europe. The Puta Madres, who in addition to the aforementioned singers in this article, are completed by Miggles (bass), Miki Beavis (violin), Katia DeVidas (Piano/keyboards), and Rafa (drums), hit the road for a bigger run of dates starting next month. See full tour dates so far below.
The single streaming above, delightfully, won't remain a stream in a screen and is set for a physical release on Record Store Day (13 April). It's the b-side to 'Who's Been Having You Over' and Doherty will be doing an instore at Rough Trade West on the day to support Record Store Day and give the album a push.
