Metronomy have shared 'Lately', the first single from their forthcoming sixth album, which be released this autumn. It’s also the ‘The Look’ hitmakers first material released since 2016.
And what a return they've made: it's a spectacular aural display – a leftfield pop gem that reflects their indie pop DNA and love of heavy dancefloor grooves. Joe Mount’s distinctive vocal melodies are at the heart of this driving banger you can dance your heart out to. Yet, it’s not at all a straight up indie hit; it’s a thought-provoking, textural hybrid of electronic and analog music with ebbs and flows throughout. Particularly enjoyable is hearing the metal-influenced palm-muted guitar riffs intertwine with breakbeat rhythms and bleak, space-y analog synth ornamentation. Given the level of inventiveness and joy achieved, some credit ought to be given to Mount for not going into a slump, and – among other things – keeping his ears primed by co-producing nine tracks on Robyn’s 2018 album titled Honey during this lull period for Metronomy in recent months.
To accompany this brilliant track, Joe Mount makes his directorial debut with an 80s inspired video. It sees a shrunken Metronomy emerging from a cassette tape left on a school girl’s bed. Of the creative process, Mount says: “This music video is a pop promo in the grand tradition of pop promos: End of school on a Friday afternoon, Mysterious little people that live in a cassette tape, concerned parents and special FX. The song and video are both about growing up.
“I’ve absolutely loved taking the opportunity to direct our own music videos. I have quite strong opinions on what music videos are for in 2019 and how they should be presented and this has been a chance for me to put my money where my mouth is!
“The most impressive thing I’ve realised is how much of a group effort creating a music video is. I’ve always known it, but this time I’ve obviously worked much closer with the various characters, involved in every department. So, thank you to them.”
